In Jeremiah 1:5, God says, “Before I formed you in the
womb, I knew you; before you were born, I sanctified you; and I ordained you
a prophet to the nations.” This verse is among the most frequently quoted
Bible passages used to support the anti-abortionist misinformation campaign
that the Bible condemns the practice. This misinformation is created through
deception … by cherry-picking this bible passage and then interpreting
it completely out of context in which it was written. In simple terms, Jeremiah
1:5 does not provide any reasonable grounds for the anti-abortion argument.
Jeremiah 1:5 does not have anything to do with abortion at all.
To interpret Jeremiah 1:5 as applicable to anyone but Jeremiah, You’d
have to believe that before your birth:
These facts align with the realistic context of Jeremiah
1:1-8. Jeremiah preached to the nations and wrote a new book of the bible.
Are you?
The anti-abortion misinformation campaign in Jeremiah 1:5 is deliberately
distorted, cherry-picked misinformation. Jeremiah penned his own narrative,
explicitly expressing that God had set him apart. This distinctiveness
meant that Jeremiah was unlike anyone else in every conceivable way; he
stood out. It takes a colossal leap of logic to conclude that Jeremiah
said that God knew and chose him from the womb; therefore, God is opposed
to terminating an unwanted pregnancy. There simply are no dots to connect
the two. Unless you are writing a new chapter in the bible, perhaps there's
a reason to reconsider your interpretation of Jeremiah 1:5.
There is no explicit or implied connection, not even a tenuous link
to Jeremiah 1:1-8 and abortion. Hence, any self-flattering interpretation
attempting to bridge the two is fundamentally flawed. Read Jeremiah
1:1-8 for yourself.
